This year as the Halloween season came up, Round Square collaborated with the Backpack Buddies group in the school on a collection drive, aptly named "We Scare Hunger". The aim was to collect non-perishable food or money donations to help with the (monthly?) packing of food that gets sent to the schools associated with the Backpack Buddies foundation.
Backpack Buddies is a Community First Foundation, and provides 'backpacks' of food for kids on weekends within inner city schools in Vancouver that are part of their recipient program. Many kids rely heavily on school food programs and may not have food on the table to go home to every night, so Backpack Buddies provides welcome assistance to the kids who need help. Collingwood School plays a large part in Backpack Buddies and provides (monthly?) packings to be sent out to their recipient school, holding numerous drives throughout the year to get students to donate food items or money to buy food that goes towards this program.
This Halloween, tons of students at Collingwood participated in the event, competing within the house system to see who could bring the most amount of non-perishable food items and/or money donations. Shoutout to Byrd house who had an astounding first place finish, cleverly organizing all their mentor classes to work together to each bring in a certain amount of food. Numerous kids also went trick or treating that Saturday night for canned or boxed food items instead of candy to be able to donate to the cause, so collection for the event had been extended to Monday as well.
Overall, We Scare Hunger was a great success this year, and hopefully it continues to exceed expectations in the coming years with both Round Square and Backpack Buddies contributing to it!
